When I first started journaling, it was pretty straightforward and simple. Open journal, write the date, set intentions, dump the brain junk.
After nearly a year of basically just writing, I began working with a coach who used creativity as the foundation of her process. This was super new to me and made me uncomfortable. I never felt creative. In fact, I didn't think I was creative at all. When I thought about creativity, I would freeze and say, “OH. NOT ME!”. Definitely stuck in limiting belief mode.
Fast forward...now I spend around an hour a week watercoloring the blank pages of my journal BEFORE I write. I experiment and explore. Some days, the paintings actually look like something. Other days, it’s a hot mess…. Just like me. Which I’ve learned to accept...100%.
I also recognize that creativity shows up in different areas of my life and is not exclusively connected to art. My gifts for designing fun, engaging learning opportunities is an aspect of my creative ability. The fact I can cook delicious meals without specifically following recipes...creativity. The way I view problem solving...creativity.
Don’t limit yourself to thinking creativity is only about art, music or theater. Creativity is simply using your imagination . . . in any and every aspect of your life.

Welcome to the CONNECT series. Over the next few weeks, I will share simple tips for connecting more deeply with yourself. After all, if you don’t know yourself...who does?
When I was teaching full-time, raising my son, getting my masters, volunteering and basically running myself ragged, I would have laughed in your face if you told me I should CONNECT with myself. Seriously? Who has time for THAT?? Who even cares??
Part of the reason I was frustrated, overwhelmed, bored and stuck was because I had no real direction. No clarity. I had no daily routine other than cursing my alarm clock and falling into bed each night exhausted.
That changed significantly when I began the simple, daily routine of sitting on my patio without technology, for 10-15 minutes, at least once per day. If it was morning, I drank my coffee. If it was evening, I might have wine. As an introvert, I craved this alone time, but rather than fill it with social media rabbit holes or checking off a to-do list, I used the time to think, plan, imagine, listen and learn.
Making time to connect with yourself is worthwhile. It’s not selfish. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Yours in BadAssery,
We recently finished a huge home improvement project. As we put things back together (my house looked like the remains of a natural disaster), I discovered numerous items that could be thrown away or donated. Things that had gotten lost in the shuffle over the years, but were still taking up space.
The same can happen in our minds. We get overloaded with negative thoughts, limiting beliefs and the clutter begins to take over. We get trapped by these thoughts and because they are so tightly held, we get stuck. Forward movement is at a standstill. As Ghandi said,
"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, and your values become your destiny."
As we enter the Spring season (you have a very small window if you live in Austin), take some time to clean out your mental closet. Evaluate your current beliefs. If you haven't worn them in a while and they no longer serve you, put them in the trash!
Cleaning out your mental clutter is just one way you can Breakout Your SoulfFull BadAss! Check out the FREE Spring Cleaning Checklist template that I created just for you.
