Intuitive Tips, Strategies, and Success Stories

A Journey to JOY with Laura Escudé, CCO/Founder of Electronic Creatives: Case Study

I met Laura in 2019 through a mutual marketing consultant, Shannon Hernandez and we all spent a week together in New Jersey on CEO workcation. It was one of the best weeks ever! Laura is the CEO and Founder of Electronic Creatives, a playback engineering agency that provides a variety of services to touring artists and organizations, such as, Pentatonix, Arianna Grande, Logic, Marie Forleo, Harry Styles, The Grammys, and American Idol. EC also teaches and trains aspiring playback engineers through its Master Track™ program.

When not running EC, Laura remains a creative genius, speaking, teaching, touring and inspiring people around the world.  She’s pretty BADASS but not so JOYFull when we first met on the plane to Jersey. During that week, we experienced the Joy|Money Matrix™ for the first time. Both of us realized what brought joy and revenue and what was sucking the life right out of us. We created strategies for delegating, dumping and redesigning less than joyfull tasks and prioritized those that brought us joy and cash flow. We felt lighter, more clear and determined to find all the joy we deserved. When it was over, we both had a plan. I was going to hire a VA for Social Media/Content/Admin and Laura was going to hire me!

Here’s what happened!

JFBAW: What problem did you need to solve?

LAURA: As a creative entrepreneur, I have plenty of grand ideas. However, I mostly just created my business step by step with no real formula or guidance in terms of the operations side of things. When I met Janifer Wheeler, I was in a very challenging space with my business. My General Manager had just gotten into an accident and I found all of the responsibility come crashing down on my shoulders. I was beside myself in agony because I did not have processes and procedures set up to account for situations like this. There was no one else in the company that knew what to do. I realized that we had been operating on a tightrope with no safety net.

JFBAW: How did I help you solve this problem?

LAURA: Janifer’s approach to helping clean up my business was very systematic. We went from department to department, hired, fired, created systems and all the while, she held my hand and was my biggest supporter and cheerleader. I wouldn't have made it to the other side without her. She helped me define and clarify all of the building blocks it takes to have a small business. Now, we have a documented operations process guide with detailed instructions on how to manage every aspect of our business: scheduling, gear builds, finance/collections, human resources, marketing and education. Job roles are clear and my staff is thrilled with the changes we’ve made. Our workplace culture was good before, but now it’s even better. I am living in greater joy and excitement about working with my team to continue growing this business!

JFBAW: Why did you choose me?

LAURA: Upon speaking with Janifer about where I was in my business, she immediately assessed the situation and offered to help. I am an intuitive person and went with my gut and hired her right away. I didn’t regret it. She has been my guiding light in a very practical, tactical way as well as spiritual guidance.

JFBAW: Anything else you’d like to add?

LAURA: If you are thinking about hiring Janifer Wheeler, please don’t hesitate. Her breadth of knowledge and support is unparalleled and she is a true gem in a sea of coaches and consultants who promise to deliver but fall short.

Team Building Activity: Breaking the Ice… Virtually Speaking

4/21/2020

Not every team building event or meeting needs an ice breaker but when done correctly, with intention and purpose, they can add a more personal connection and contribute to building an inclusive culture.

There are loads of virtual ice breaking ideas on the interwebs, so if you need suggestions, Google. But if you want to focus on how to use them effectively, keep reading.

  1. Establish your goals and objectives. What ice needs to be broken and why? Does your team need more creativity, communication, collaboration or critical thinking? Why do they need it?
  2. Make sure people will be comfortable. Does your ice breaker activity contribute to an inclusive workplace environment? Is there background knowledge people need to engage effectively? If so, share in advance so that everyone is on equal footing when the ice breaker begins.
  3. Evaluate if an ice breaker is appropriate for this particular meeting. Some meetings don’t benefit from ice breakers.  Consider your meeting’s allotted time, agenda, purpose and participants.
WHY AM I SHARING THIS WITH YOU NOW?
  • The need for personal connection is overwhelming right now and will continue to be as we eventually return to our brick and mortar locations.
  • Investing in your employees TODAY will ensure they return TOMORROW. It also shows your customers and clients that you value people over profit.
  • There’s no time like the present to strategically plan for team building and professional development.
  • Diverse thoughts and opinions, equal access to opportunities and true belonging through inclusiveness have an unmatched ROI....in fact, 35% more profitability than those who don’t embrace D&I.

Team Building Activities: How’s that Book Going?

4/14/2020

“If you want people to write nice things about you or your organization, you have to actually give them something nice to say. Treat your people as if every single one of them is going to write a book about their experience, and all of your investors have a Barnes & Noble membership.”
- Madison Butler

This is true whether we are managing a global pandemic or when handling smaller scale issues. Investing in our people and teams remains important no matter the circumstances.

This week, I’m sharing some great tips from Emily Morgan and The Texas Conference for Women on how to stay connected now and later.
  1. Create brief opportunities for everyone to see each other. Her entire team comes together over Zoom for 15 minutes once a week, with various team members taking a turn hosting. They cover core values, one positive development, organizational updates, shared learnings, and a story of values in action.
  2. Offer small, more in-depth chances to connect. Morgan’s team is divided into packs of five to seven who meet on Zoom one hour a week where they have an opportunity to share—including, as she puts it, to “complain to and encourage”—one another. This, she says, helps create the culture they would have if working in the office together.
  3. Think creatively about how you can support your team now. For example, she is organizing a virtual camp where volunteers teach topics that will aim to keep children engaged while their parents focus on work.
  4. Establish clear boundaries and expectations. Being clear about metrics the team should be focused on over the next 30, 60 and 90 days. This helps everyone stay focused on priorities and know what they are accountable for.
  5. Try to model calmness. Morgan says she meditates, limits her news intake, and reflects on whether how she is leading and acting is aligned with how she wants to see others act. “I don’t,” she adds, “want to be leading from a place of reaction.” Emily Morgan is the founder and CEO of Delegate Solutions, which offers premium-level virtual assistant services for entrepreneurs.

TEAM BUilding : Connecting your Peeps through a Virtual Water Cooler

4/7/2020

As you know, things are tough right now. Our resources and resolve are being tested in ways we have never experienced. We miss our human connections.

Conference rooms are empty and the ability to share a quick word in the break room is no longer an option. Those small human interactions that happen all through the day are temporarily missing.

How can you congregate around the water cooler if it’s no longer available?

That’s why I’m popping in today. We don’t have to forget those small interactions - we just have to reframe them.

Here are Few Ways:
  1. Create a Virtual Water Cooler using a collaborative tool such as Slack, Chanty, Troop Messenger, What’sApp, or Blog-In. Post conversation starters about the things often discussed at the Water Cooler..popular Netflix Shows (HAVE YOU SEEN TIGER KING...I just know Carol killed her husband!)
  2. Survey your peeps to find out what kind of current and future professional development/team building  they may need by adding to your Water Cooler channel. These tools will make collecting data a breeze:  Google Forms, JotForm or SurveyMonkey.
  3. Celebrate little wins AND big ones. Host a virtual party, share it on your blog, website, LinkedIn page, community channel, etc. Have fun...dress up...dance!!
